Why do atheists scientists and Christian scientists have such a different way to approach knowledge?

Electromagnetic waves propagate by interactions with "the electric field lines of matter" -- That must be the explanation for why light passes SO much more easily and rapidly through a dense solid like a brick of lead, than it does through a gas like our atmosphere or through a vacuum...
