How do you know if the piston rings or the valves are no good while preforming a compression test?

Put a small amount (capful) of oil in the cylinder through the spark plug hole, this will temporarily increase the seal of the rings and let you know if the compression leak is caused by the rings. If it isn't, then it has to be the valves.
